Cryo-preserved platelets quality over time after thawing

FTIR microscopy reveals time-dependet alterations of the biochemical profile of cryo-preserved platelets after thawing, letting to suggest their safe usage in medical settings 1h after their thawing.

Cryo-preserved platelets (cryo-PLT)  may be considered a precious back-up product to be used during periods of Fresh-PLT shortage to prevent bleeding in non-hemorrhagic patients. Nevrteheless, cryopreservation and time after thawing affects morpho-functional characteristics of platelets, posing concerns on their use for the purpose they are routinely requested in clinical context. Lipid peroxidation and protein misfolding seen by FTIR microscopy account for the alteration of membrane integrity and stiffness, which occur irreversibly 3h after thawing.

It would be then best-practice to transfuse cryo-PLT within 1 hour of thawing to maintain the platelets in their best performing condition.
