MUR International Project ELETTRA

logoThe International Project ELETTRA started in 2014 with the aim of continuing and extending the service to the international user community and funding a series of international collaboration activities stemming from existing commitments and from the know how developed at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste manages a wide array of laboratories and analytical tools covering various research fields, from Structural Biology to Medicine, from Cultural Heritage to materials of interest in catalysis and energy sustainability studies. This infrastructure continuously upgrades its most advanced instrumentation and provides high level scientific and technical support to external users, in an environment of international competition, applying the strictest selection criteria based on scientific merit in a peer-review open access framework. It is the infrastructure mission to provide access to its resources to international scientists and industries developing their research in the fields of innovative Materials and Biomaterials of high quality and relevance. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is a research centre associated to the IAEA in Vienna and to the Central European Initiative (CEI) and collaborates with ICTP (UNIDO), supporting international users access to its infrastructures, as well as specific training and technology transfer initiatives.

Other Italian public research institutions involved

CNR – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerca
INFN – Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare
INSTM – Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per la Scienza e la Tecnologia dei Materiali
CNISM – Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario di Struttura della Materia
OGS – Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale

Half of the 28 beamlines and related experimental stations operating at the third generation light source have been realized and are managed together with CNR institutes, in particular IOM-CNR, IC-CNR and ISM-CNR, whole personnel is seconded to the Elettra premises. Furthermore, strong and long lasting collaborations are ongoing with INFN,  Universities and Interuniversity Consortia in Italy and abroad.

Strategic objectives

  • Improve the quality and promote the structuring of the national scientific community through the competition with the international community for the access to the Large Research Infrastructures.
  • Exploit the Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste continuous technological development to specifically train technicians and personnel devoted to the support of innovation, encouraging their mobility towards industry.
  • Maintain and improve the Elettra relevant positioning in the European and Global scientific landscapes.
  • Expose international scientists to the Italian technical-scientific excellence existing at Elettra, using Elettra as demonstrator of the Italian industrial capability in the related fields.
  • Transfer to the Italian industry the know how developed within the technological platform of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste acting as support to Elettra.
  • Increase and strengthen the links with the AREA Science Park scientific and technological hub to maximise Elettra’s positive impacts on both regional and national industries.
