Coordinator, LDM program at FERMI@Elettra
Ref. E/11/05
Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.
Job Description: The selected candidate will be appointed as a staff scientist in charge of directing the Low Density Matter (LDM) program of FERMI@Elettra in collaboration with the existing LDM beamline team and developing research activities in the area of high-resolution VUV and soft X-ray photoionization spectroscopy of atoms, molecules and clusters, as well as photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. He/she will assist and advise external users in the performance of experiments at the LDM beamline and interact with internal and external research teams in further developing and adapting instrumentation and methods. The LDM coordinator is expected to establish an independent program of in-house research that pushes the beamline to the frontiers of research in the field of rarefied matter under extremely intense VUV/soft X-ray radiation in the femtosecond timescale. He/she will develop new international collaborations as well as become involved in already established research collaborations, to expand the LDM user base as well as gain further support for the program. In addition, the coordinator is expected to generate and submit research proposals to suitable funding agencies.

Qualifications: The candidate should have a Ph.D., or equivalent degree in Physics, Chemistry or a related field, and postdoctoral experience in experimental physics or in a related field, with demonstrated ability to promote and perform independent work in a group-oriented research environment. A distinguished publication record in photoelectron spectroscopy with applications to the study of structural and electronic properties of atoms, molecules, and clusters is essential. Previous experience in the framework of a FEL-related project is highly desirable. A broad spectrum of related scientific interests is an asset. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language is highly desirable.
